Fiji, is this true paradise?

Upon coming to Fiji you expect a picture perfect paradise like you would see on a postcard or your Instagram feed. Someone made that comment and I overheard the response of “what, just an isolated beach?” And that leads to the question, what does paradise mean? Is it simply a deserted shoreline with coconuts half-buried in the sand? Or is it found in the people—the warmth of the local villagers, the rhythm of life in the small towns, the moments that can’t be captured on Instagram? For me, Fiji was both. And here are some images that, I hope, do it some justice.

Somehow I went form a grubby backpacker to sailing from New Zealand around islands in the South Pacific, an experience I will look back on with pure joy forever. We covered 400 nautical miles sailing from Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, into the waters of Nadi, Fiji.

Here are some images to show my time there, reminding myself the blessings I have to see such incredible places!

Meeting the local community
Drinking a ritual kava out of a tanoa
Being welcomed into their home!
My first helicopter ride over the island!
What a blessing to experience this!
The underwater world of Fiji
Capturing the sea life
Everyday life for locals
Avoiding the resorts and seeing true Fiji
Quad biking the island!
Yes I did crash
Thank you Fiji!
